In a decisive victory during the June 2025 primary election, Heather Day has been elected to one of four County Committee seats representing Election District 30 in Crown Heights South, Brooklyn. Securing the highest number of votes in a competitive race among six candidates, Heather’s win reflects a strong endorsement from the community she is committed to serving.
Joining the County Committee in 2022, Heather brings with her a rich background in non-profit leadership and city government. With expertise in youth development, job readiness training, justice reform, and mental health services, she is well-positioned to drive positive change within her district. Her continued work on the Committee aims to enhance civic engagement, connecting local residents with essential resources and giving voice to the community’s concerns and aspirations.
“I’m honored to have earned the support of my neighbors and look forward to continuing to represent them in this capacity,” said Heather. “County Committee is a cornerstone of our local democracy, and serving in this role allows me to help build a truly democratic and thriving Brooklyn.”
The County Committee serves as the most localized level of governance within the Democratic Party, functioning as a bridge between the party and community members. Committee members play an essential role in grassroots organizing, nominating judges, and filling candidates for special elections. However, despite the critical function of this body, many seats remain vacant or are held by inactive members, missing key opportunities for community representation.
To address this issue, initiatives like the Rep Your Block campaign have gained traction, encouraging more Brooklyn residents to take an active role in local politics. The campaign seeks to fill vacant seats and bolster a sustainable and truly representative democratic structure in Brooklyn. Heather’s involvement in the campaign reflects her dedication to ensuring that the voices of everyday Brooklynites are heard in the political process.
“The community is strongest when neighbors work together,” Heather remarked. “During my canvassing this summer, I had the opportunity to speak with so many passionate community members who love Crown Heights and are concerned about important neighborhood issues. I’m excited to continue collaborating with my fellow committee members and residents to promote participatory democracy and improve the well-being of our community.”
For those interested in making an impact, additional appointments to the County Committee will be made in late September at the borough-wide Organizational Meeting. Spots are still available for those who want to join without campaigning, as new members can gain a seat through appointment. Heather and the Rep Your Block team are calling on Brooklyn Democrats to get involved and help shape the future of local governance.
